JESCO Group Supports Infrastructure of Noi Bai International Airport, the Gateway to Hanoi

—Construction of Noi Bai International Airport Terminal 2―

Vietnam’s emerging economy attracts the world’s attention
Improved transportation infrastructure is key to fulfilling the country’s great potential

The continuing dynamic development of Southeast Asia is fueled by its abundant, youthful population. Vietnam, with solid achievements to its credit in shifting to a market economy and opening to the world through implementation of Doi Moi(*1), has been recording GDP growth averaging 6-7% since 2000(*2). The world is paying keen attention to Vietnam, captivated by the country’s great potential.

During its long history, Vietnam has played a pivotal role in Southeast Asia, not least through vigorous transportation along the Mekong, capitalizing on the country’s geography. Vietnam has also witnessed a sharp rise in the number of inbound and outbound tourists in recent years. Moreover, following the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in late 2015, flows of people and goods within the ASEAN region are expected to gain added momentum. Vietnam is addressing the pressing need to improve its transportation infrastructure.

JESCO ASIA participated in a major project that is a key enabler of Vietnam’s growing prosperity

In 2007, the Vietnamese government formulated a plan to boost the capacity of Noi Bai International Airport, the gateway to Hanoi, the capital. This major project involved construction of Terminal 2 (Noi Bai T2) at the Noi Bai International Airport, which already had the largest capacity in northern Vietnam, raising the passenger throughput capacity from 9 million to 19 million a year. Noi Bai T2 has a total floor area of 150,000 ㎡.

JESCO ASIA, the JESCO Group’s subsidiary in Vietnam, was responsible for the design and installation of electrical devices and installation of lighting for electrical equipment for this project.

Track record and high evaluation in Vietnam: the key to winning the order for this major project

“Securing an order for electrical equipment installation at the international airport building in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, had been our dream ever since the establishment of JESCO ASIA,” says Naoyuki Kato (current Executive Officer of JESCO Holdings) who made a great contribution to the winning of this project by keeping close relations with construction companies.

Since Noi Bai T2 was a Japanese ODA project, participating companies had to satisfy high technical standards. Kato notes that JESCO ASIA’s 15-year track record in Vietnam was a crucial factor in satisfying the stringent criteria for ODA project participants. For example, JESCO ASIA was awarded a gold medal by the Minister of Transport of Vietnam in 2007 based on the expertise it demonstrated in supervision of construction of the international passenger terminal at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. Such high evaluation led to the winning of the order.

“High evaluation of what we have accomplished opens the door to major projects. That is the best part of being a group of dedicated, highly capable, professional engineers. Participation in the Noi Bai T2 project for the construction of Vietnam’s key airport terminal was a source of great satisfaction and pride to the JESCO Group. Our Vietnamese engineers were so enthusiastic because they were contributing to the development of their country. The Noi Bai T2 project is undoubtedly a watershed in the history of the JESCO Group,” says Kato.
